Several months ago while driving to the park with my kids, my son Tate said, “Mom, for my birthday I want a new room.” I literally gasped out loud. I wasn’t sure if my son was asking for a gift or giving me a gift. There’s nothing I love more than redecorating a room. You can read about another one of my room redo’s here. Every room in my house has about a two year shelf life. I get bored and love to switch things up. “What kind of room do you want?” I asked. “A Camo/Army room,” my little All American Boy said. I could not of been happier. How fun was this going to be?
I immediately got started. That night I was all over Pinterest, Houzz and Etsy searching all things Camo/Army. I decided on a camo painted accent wall. I pinned several that I liked on Pinterest and the next morning sent them to my Mom. She assured me that she and my Dad could do this. I wasted no time and started ordering things for the room makeover. Throughout the months, the room design changed, not once, but several times. The painted camo accent wall changed to brick wallpaper and I ordered and changed my mind on comforters at least three times.
I guess that’s what happens when you have months and months to prepare. Then one day I got a phone call from my Mom and she said, “I have an idea, why don’t you let me and Dad come and set up the room to surprise Tate?” This idea was perfect. We told my son we would take him to Disneyland the weekend of his birthday, so my parents flying in to set up his room while we were gone was the perfect plan. My Mom did the exact same thing for my sister and niece for her birthday several years ago as well, so now it’s tradition! I look forward to the day we can do this for my daughter Baylor too. If there is anyone I trust to help set up a room it’s THE MAMA!
As my son’s birthday weekend got closer and the guest closet holding all of his stuff got fuller and fuller, my nerves and anxiety got stronger and stronger. Normally when you’re decorating a room you actually test out what you buy and see if it works. I wasn’t able to do this except for a quick pillow preview that I sent my Mom while Tate was out of the house. I just kept buying things and storing them away.
When the weekend finally arrived and my parents and brother got to my house, I told my Mom she had to text me and send pics every step of the way (controlling much?!) It was so fun seeing the progress and my vision finally coming together.
A few sneaky facetime calls and a quick run for my Mom to Target to get the right sized sheets because I ordered the wrong size 🙄 and the room came together perfectly!!! We came home from Disneyland to my family and my husband’s family in the kitchen with presents, pizza, and cake.
My son was shocked. He had no idea and the surprise was a success. It’s funny because on the car ride home he said, “Mom when we get home can you start setting up my room?” I told him “of course”! Little did he know it was already finished! Once he opened all of his presents we took him to his room for the big reveal. HE LOVED IT! It was such a wonderful 6th birthday for my son. I hope it’s one he will never forget – I know I won’t! Thank you Mom, Dad and Jonny for setting up my boy’s fabulous Camo/Army room!

How creative!!! Certainly not your typical “army” room. I am lovin’ the lighting and the pillows; especially the the grey “knotty” one. Ethan loved the plane crashing out through the wall…typical boy! LOL

Thanks Tema! Abby was determined not to let the “army” theme get too crazy! I agree with Ethan – that plane is really awesome.
