I decided to do this DIY wall treatment after seeing a picture on juliannetaylorstyles Instagram Feed. She was redoing her guest room and was using gold tape to make a pattern on the wall. I loved the way it looked. In fact, the entire room is absolutely gorgeous. I thought this is great idea for a cheap, easy and dramatic wall treatment in one of my guest rooms.
Julianne’s design is detailed and precise. Unfortunately, I would never have the patience to pull this off. So, I decided to put my own twist on it. My plan was to do something similar to the two designs below. I saw them on the Instagram feeds of jennfeldmandesigns (a painted design) and tempaper_designs (a temporary wallpaper).
Because the bedding in my guest room has silver metallic threading, I knew I wanted to use silver tape. After painting a black accent wall in a bedroom in my son’s house, (you can see the picture of his wall and read about the process by clicking here ) I knew I wanted a black accent wall in my house too. So, I decided to paint the guest room wall black before applying the tape. I felt like the silver would stand out on the black wall. I bought several rolls of the tape, all of them just a bit different (width and brand) at Hobby Lobby and Michaels. All I can say is EPIC FAIL. Within a few minutes of applying the tape, it all fell off 😩. Geez, now what? I decided to send Julianne a message and ask her what type of tape she used. She quickly and graciously responded that she used Washi tape. I had no clue what Washi tape was but Google provides every answer to every question right? Well, lo and behold, I found it on Amazon.
There are several brands of Washi tape on Amazon, but this particular brand is MT Masking Tape. My advice would be to stick with the MT brand because I know it works and it won’t fall off. It comes in a lot of different colors and widths. The tape I used is 3/5 in. x 33 ft. It was a Prime product and was only $4.98 a roll. I had no clue how many rolls to buy so I ended up buying a little more than I thought I would need. Always better to have too much rather than too little.
I had no plan for a specific design so I just started in a corner and started placing the tape diagonally on the wall. The good thing about this tape is that it is repositionable. If you change your mind about the placement, you can move it. Forty-five minutes later and my wall was complete. I only used three rolls so my costs was around $15. This was probably the fastest most economical wall treatment I have ever done. And the beauty of it is when I get tired of it, it can quickly be removed with no harm to the wall whatsoever!
My Wall Before
My Wall After
After Abby saw my wall, she decided to use the Washi tape on a wall in her foyer. Her technique was different from mine and she used two different colors of tape (gold and silver). The result is just stunning. It took her a little longer and she used more tape than I did, but it was certainly worth it!

This wall treatment would also be great for:
Apartments
Black or gold tape would look awesome on white or neutral colored walls of an apartment or a rental home.
Dorm Rooms
Dorm room design and decor has become so popular. This tape is absolutely perfect for adding interest and drama to a boring dorm room.
Kids playrooms and game rooms
Along with the geometric design, you could do a child’s name or any wording with this tape. Maybe your favorite saying? There is a rainbow ombre pattern that would be adorable in a nursery.
Furniture
Why not create a design on furniture? You could use it on a nursery dresser, wooden headboard or a console table.
Basically, the possibilities are endless. If you do decide to use this tape on a project of your own, send us a picture and we’ll post it on one of our social media sites. Can’t wait to see what you come up with.

Good luck Rachel. It will look gorgeous on a navy will. Abby was originally going to do gold tape on a navy wall but decided to use gold and silver on a white wall in her entry way. It is absolutely stunning. Looks very different from the black wall I did in my bedroom. I will be adding the pictures of her wall on this blog soon and I will also be posting on our social media sites.
