She Gets It From Her Mama

I Iove fall, especially Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is the one time each year that my entire family sits down together at my Grandmother’s dining table for a meal. And because this only happens once a year, I try to make the table dramatic and memorable. Last year’s table was white and blush. In fact, last year, I styled four different tables that you can read about here. The blush table was one of my all time favorites; very feminine and outside the box for Thanksgiving. This year, I did a 360, having a mostly black color scheme. I love the look of a “non-traditional” Thanksgiving table so I decided to go with a Fall Goes Fornasetti theme.

Some of you are probably wondering what or who is Fornesetti? Piero Fornasetti was an Italian artist who saw a picture of a woman named Lina Cavalieri in a magazine. He was so infatuated with her, he created over 500 different versions of her face. Can you even imagine having someone that obsessed with your face? Do you know how it feels to spend money on electrical or plumbing issues when all you would rather do is buy something really pretty and fun for your house instead? That’s pretty much how I felt about this long overdue office makeover. It’s upstairs in what is considered a half story. It’s just one room and the entire space is Jerry T (my hubby’s) office. And because its his office, (is there a nice way to say that he has borderline hoarding issues?) I basically never go up there and never have to see it. Much like a plumbing or electrical issue.

We set this space up as his office about 20 years ago and we haven’t done much to it since. We did add a closet a few years ago so we could call it a “fourth bedroom”. This room was definitely in need of a long overdue office makeover. So that brings me to last December, when we were approached by a map company to do a collaboration. Abby passed it along to me and I was on board. I picked out two maps for the office and thought, well maybe this is a good opportunity to redo the entire space.

Have you ever changed or wanted to update a room, promising your husband that this will be the last house project for a while? Then you discover that your one changed room has now made you want to change another room, eventually leading to a whole house makeover? Or is that just me?! This is exactly what happened when I updated our living room and added a fun trim feature wall. I loved the wall so much but it honestly made me realize that the other rooms in close proximity (i.e. kitchen and dining room) now needed to be just as fabulous. A phone call to my trusty contractor would definitely fix this. So not long after I had my living room feature wall done by him, I called him to now discuss my dining room!…

A few months ago, the Mama and I received an email from a company called Home Dynamix asking if we wanted a rug in exchange for an Instagram and blog post. What I never realized when I started our Instagram page, a little over three years ago, was that one day companies would be sending us free stuff in an exchange for a post. I’m not gonna lie, it’s pretty amazing and I’m so thankful for these generous companies. A rug is a pretty big item so I was super excited. However, I didn’t really need a rug so I told my mom to get one for her house. Unfortunately, she didn’t need one either. So then I thought, well maybe I’ll replace my dining room rug or get a new rug for my living room. I looked every night for a few weeks and just couldn’t decide….

Something happens when you become an empty nester. The bedrooms previously occupied by your children, become guest rooms. Or, for at least me they did. I’m sure some people may feel like they need to keep them exactly as they were when their kids left home (short of a shrine situation) but for me, it was an opportunity to redecorate and change things up – HOORAY! Although I still refer to these bedrooms by my kids names (Abby’s room and Johnny’s room) they do not, in any form or fashion, resemble what my 18 year olds left behind.

Johnny’s room for example has taken on several metamorphic transformations over the twenty year period since he left for college. The last bedroom switch up included a black iron bed that I bought from Zgallerie years ago, new lighter paint, a Dwell duvet and custom made dust ruffle and drapes. It’s a small room and there is a dresser in the closet, so basically the room consists of the bed and a built in dresser and shelf.
